Editorial Letter: Swallowing Stones

Dear xxxxx,

Stereotyping is one of the worst forms of bullying. A person shouldn’t live their lives knowing in the back of there heads that they are a “geek,” or a “jock,” or a “nerd.” People should look at themselves and see themselves as a person, because thats what we all are, right?

A stereotype put into words in the best way is an assumption. We are all guilty of it. I stereotyped one of my best friends right now. Whenever I met this person, I immediately came to the assumption that she was Little Miss Perfect. She always wanted to be in the spotlight all the time, whether we were at school or in the mall. One day we somehow stumbled into the same group of friends and we have been ever since. She had been having major issues going on at home, so school and the mall was the only place she felt she could get the attention she felt she needed and deserved.

We stereotype for many different reasons. Maybe we feel like someone has more money than us, so we automatically assume that they are brats. Or maybe we see someone and they are a lot more peppy and happy than us, so we assume that the person is a bratty cheerleader rubbing her happiness in everyone elses face. Whatever the reason, it is not fair to that person or ourselves to stereotype someone off of a first impression. After all, nobody would like anyone if we judged everyone off of their first impression, right?

Sincerely,

Haley Spencer
